About Charles

Charles Portelli is an Australian artist who lives and works on the north side of Brisbane. Born in Malta, Charles had his first training in painting at St Joseph’s Technical College before immigrating to Australia with his family. Although he has taken a few hiatuses from his painting in the 40 years he’s been wielding a brush – one lasted for a decade – Charles has always been compelled to put paint to canvas again.

Through the 1960s and into the 80s he painted in a number of mediums, including oil, acrylic, mixed medium, china and pottery with most projects given as gifts to friends. After a dry spell in the 1990s, Charles completed his first work in almost 15 years, a 1.8m x 1m seascape for his eldest daughter at the turn of the millennium.
